Some say his hair is spikey because of the flow of 12v current through his body, and that he has been known to drink petrol on the job. All we know is...he's called Paul Woodford!
The story begins when Paul was barely old enough to hold a pencil, yet would be sat with his father Dave for hours, learning how to draw rally cars and customising them. From a rally car mobile above his cot, to a teenager building radio controlled kit cars and racing go-karts, Paul was developing a real passion for cars, in particular competition and classic cars.
“I remember being taken to school in road rally cars, from a lime green Saab 96 to Minis and Mk1 Escorts. It’s in the family really!”
Paul and his father built a Mk2 Cortina GT historic stage rally car, which they then campaigned in various sprint and hillclimb events before deciding that a change of direction was needed. The car was sold to Ireland where it regularly competes on tarmac stage rallies.
By this point, Paul was now at university (didn’t those years fly!!) studying for a degree in creative writing, and writing freelance for a number of car magazines. This combined his two passions; cars and writing, and allowed him to gain experience in the world of automotive journalism.
“This is something I really enjoyed and would love to get back into, but at the time, studies and car building (!) came first”
You’ll notice we said car building. You see, while most of his peers were out spending their student loans on beer and baked beans, Paul was formulating plans to build another competition car. At school, he’d always promised himself that he’d build an immaculately prepared XR2 racing car, and so the dream took shape.
Paul's experience to date includes the British Sprint and Hillclimb Championship where he competed in selected events at various race tracks.
Fighting above his weight in the 1400-2000cc class, Woodford
achieved some impressive results in the 1600 Fiesta, beating cars ranging from
Lotus Sunbeams to Peugeot 205 GTIs and even BMW M3s.
Paul also co-drove for Joe Taylor in the 2008 F1000 Rally Championship, the pair achieving a top ten finish in the 2008 F1000 Championship.
Last year saw Paul take to the special stages in a newly rebuilt Ford Ka. After a difficult year, but with some good results under his belt, Paul is tackling a new challenge in 2010 with a Citroen Saxo.
2010 will also see Paul continue his role as a TV Presenter with some of the UK's premier motorsport championships. Look out for him on a screen near you!
